How in the world do you make art? Do you make it solely for other people? What about for yourself or a specific audience?
The answer is a bother. Complexity and negotiating difficult balances is so last year. I’m ready to find a philosophy that gives me the straight answers. Like a fad diet, I could just eat the right groups and skip the others.
Creme Wafers (TM) should be avoided. Green and leafy (TM available) seem safer. Yes, art is wonderful to share and again yes, you’ve got to love it to bother.
I mean, after all, when you make good art you’re spending energy not only solving a problem, but creating the problem you’re solving. Doctors, social workers and engineers please refrain from rolling your eyes; the function of art is something I’m passionate about.
You know what bad art is? Bad art is art that ducks any relationship to a problem.
