‘Fraid not. They were setting up for a wedding in the main space when I was there. It’s such an odd addition when one realizes it’s basically one gallery, an auditorium, a gift shop, a cafe, parking, and the reception hall. The majority of the galleries are in the existing building (and actually great gallery spaces, at that), so it’s more of a social addition than an art addition. It’s very similar (in idea) to the loft building I work in: the ground floor and basement levels have been renovated into galleries and artist studios. But a lot of the area is taken up by a double-height reception space that hosts everything from corporate parties to some sort of shopping thing that had lines down the block.
That was my impression too–don’t get me wrong: inspired building–but it functionally works as a big door. I wonder if they ever will place art in their big hall? What a challenge.
That would be something else. Of course someone like Serra pops to mind. But something large would have to be constructed in the hall, because the doors leading to it are typical double doors. Also, some site-specific performance pieces in the space would be great.
