Perhaps director Luis Buñuel’s best work, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (1972) easily makes my top 15 movies of all time [I really am working on a list of my favorite 100 movies, although not necessarily the best 100 movies]. Surreal yet fun, bombastic yet subtle, DCB starts somewhat painfully, similar to The Gods Must be Crazy, slowly building in complexity into a final crescendo that will leave your mouth open. A playful, dry — and simultaneously dramatic — film for contemporary poetry advocates.

A wonderful film, and Bunuel at the top of his form. “Bombastic yet subtle” — that’s gotta be one of the best summaries of the film I’ve read.
