One of the best works at a show worth seeing, Marcie Kaufman’s Trip Through Your Wires at Supersonic playfully blends painting and photography. I should note that the process has something to do with the computer–but doesn’t everything? The result is slick in a good way: taking risks yet remaining magnetic. Kaufman claims she’s, “exploring the relationships between painting and photography, body and landscape, lived experience and digitally mediated understanding of that experience,” but I don’t believe her. I think she’s having fun and it shows.

I emailed her my theory, and her response was to the point, “The relationships that I mentioned are starting points and important to my process and content. They are very much present, from hand drawn combinations of digital anatomy and topography to juxtapositions of paintings and photographs. But, I do not deny that I am taking risks and having fun making the work.”
