Kansas City may be small, but it’s organized, which makes its scale somewhat irrelevant. The gallery district is compact, easily navigable and coordinated. It’s such a supportive community that a gallery director will draw you a map to other galleries and make a suggestion about where to get the best barbecue nearby. One of the lynch-pins of the district is The Dolphin, a sophisticated space that would be at home in Chelsea or Culver City, whose elegance is tempered by warm Kansas City hospitality.

The images above are from a photo show we saw at the Dolphin which is now closed (the website has more examples). It was a strong group show of KC-area photographers that included Feinstein’s Shredding Project series — where she shredded family photos and re-photographed them — and Jaimie Warren’s sharp pairings of eyebrow threading (above) set next to an extreme close-up of sticky barbecued ribs.
