We leave for Greece in about a week and a half. Currently we’re mapping the project, packing and selecting gear to take. We’re making a video installation for Qbox, a gallery in Athens, which we’ll create on the Greek island of Tzia. We’re taking our main video camera, a Panasonic DVX100b and upgrading it with an underwater housing. We’ve been researching digital photo cameras to compliment our DVX and have arrived at a decision: the Canon 5D with a EWA-Marine underwater housing (a deal at under $400).
We’ve considered all sorts of cameras and strategies, and decided on the Canon because it was the cheapest solution that would meet our need: 30×40″ quality prints. A medium format film-based camera would cost a lot less, however it takes expertise we don’t have [and don’t want].
It’s hard to spend money on the right tool, however it’s painful to save money on a tool that doesn’t help.
