Greece: Location Scouting and Materials

For the video that we’re shooting on July 28, we’re building a city that we’ll destroy and sink — thus all the underwater photography testing. Today we drove all over the island and made a final decision on the location for the shoot (the top two images).

We’ve known for a while what the material of the island would consist of but still needed a structural base. After leaving the last deserted, dirt-road beach, we passed a dumpster filled with clear coroplast plastic sheeting. Material we would have gladly paid a pretty penny for in the states. Lucky us!

The real comedy happened when we tried to fit it in our Citroen loaner-car.

The winds died down today, so we went to our favorite beach to do some more testing. It’s hard to decide on a “favorite” when all the beaches here are so wonderful.

Over the weekend, our hosts from the gallery came over from Athens and brought us supplies from the city. Armed with an aquarium, a photo printer to print the stacks of images we’ve taken (to use as building blocks for the model) and other odds and ends, we’re much further along towards being ready for the video / photo shoot on July 28, when a handful of the gallery’s artists will join us on the island as performers (and as fellow ouzo drinkers… opa!).

Aquarium_9

Got the aquarium for shooting a cleaner water-line. Compare it to the previous underwater images in which we only used the underwater housing. We’re trying to decide which “look” we like better for the final video. It’s been very windy on the island — why the water is so stirred up — so we’ll have to do more tests when the wind calms down.

Phototest

Here we’re testing the auto-focus on the camera when it’s underwater. The question being: how to get a crisp water line on our 5d? The answer being: the enlistment of an old-school underwater photographer’s trick. An aquarium.

See how pale I am? Not for too much longer…

After exploring many of the beaches on the island, we’ve started to test our equipment in the environment. The underwater housing is working beautifully on both cameras, and we’ve spent the last several days immersed in the cleanest, coolest, clearest water, with all our nerdy gear. The three shots above are from the Canon 5D and the video below is the DVX-100.

We got to the island a few days ago and have just begun to take it all in. We couldn’t ask for a more peaceful or beautiful place to work. We’ve spent the last two days sketching out the project, old-school style, in an actual sketchbook. Imagine that. Today we drove the scenic route around the other side of the island, scouting out locations. We picked up glass outdoor light housings, a sheepskin and a colored glass chandelier along the roadside. For what purpose? No telling.

Tonight: internet cafe; oyzo and pastries; falling asleep with the French doors open to the wind over the Aegean sea.

Greece: Underwater Test

Tub

Here’s an image from our first underwater photography test. We’re going through our technical work-flow to make sure we have everything. Something we now know we need: equipment towel + polarizing filter.

As a dorky technical aside, both our video and photo cameras have 72mm lenses so one filter works for both systems. Gotta love efficiency.

Our main camera bag.

Right now we’re packing for the trip. We’ll be on an island without a lot of technical resources–do we have enough miniDV tapes? Do we need that polarizing filter? Should we pack the drill?
