Peter Owen, who has performed in two of our previous projects, is helping us construct the lilies. He won't be in front of the camera this time, but his wife Alison will.  Peter is standing on our kitchen counter, on top of the newly painted cabinets. Since the kitchen is one of the sets for this project, we decided the cabinets needed to be black to fit the composition.

Our friends often appear in our work. In a way, each piece we do is somewhat autobiographical: our work is a record of the people, places and things in our life.

We've finished the base of 2 lilies and are now working on the third (and final) one. We also think we have an idea on how to make the petals: think loose geometric.

The 11′ tall lily skeleton is finished. Now we’ll either wimp out and make the next lily skeleton or tackle figuring out how to make petals.

After a lot of tests, we’ve decided on a construction system to build the 11′ tall lilies. This is the start of the base (the bottom of two lily petals). They have to be big and over-built since they’ll hold two thirds of the total weight of this flower.

It’s nice to buy flowers for research.

We’re currently figuring out how to make a lilly. If you have a suggestion, please let us know.

So for the last 3-6 weeks we’ve been pulling our hair out brainstorming what to do with all this gorgeous plastic: it’s conduit used to wrangle computer cables in office buildings. Each small connector is about $25 new. There is a story behind our acquisition of this material that has everything to do with our decision to fabricate it into lilies. More of this story later.

So I never thought I’d be taking photos of flowers. Really cracks me up. For our next project we’re making 11 foot lilies and documenting the process here.
